But since the D are in fact the greatest band on earth, I won't complain too much. In short, this is not album I hoped for. As a follow-up to their classic debut, this disc falls far short. That's not to say it isn't worth picking up though. It definitely rocks, and Jack's voice is as awesome as ever.
The frequent gripes about the short duration of most of the tracks (and the entire CD) are true. But it is worth remembering that if you remove all the spoken-word bits from the first album, the total running time isn't that much longer. Many of the tracks found here exist mainly to counterpoint the plot of the movie.
This CD is not without it's moments. The opening track, "Kickapoo," must be recognized as a Tenacious D classic. And even though "History" has been well known for years to devotees of the D, I am very glad to have a great rendition of it on an album. "Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)" is another great track - even if it loses a bit outside the context of the movie.
Even the lesser tracks are growing on me as I listen to it more. I think I had to get past the first few listens, in order to accept that it simply is not as great as their debut. That album is such a supremely awesome piece of work; I hoped the D would follow it up with something equal. I was pleased to see the album debut in Billboard's Top Ten - I hope that Jack and Kyle continue their reign and record more music.
